Kaiko.ai

Amsterdam, June 2025

kaiko.ai, a pioneering health tech scaleup, is transforming oncology care by bringing frontier AI into the hands of clinicians. Through their expert-level clinical assistant, kaiko.w, they integrate multimodal foundation models directly into clinical workflows, uncovering critical insights hidden deep within medical data and enhancing decision-making across the entire patient pathway.

Developed in collaboration with leading research institutes like the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI-AVL), kaiko.w operates across all modalities relevant to oncology – from EHR data to radiology, pathology and genomics. By providing a unified, intuitive interface, the goal is to empower oncology teams with real-time insights for more precise diagnosis, personalized treatment selection, and improved patient outcomes.

“The fundamental takeaway from the past 3.5 years is that data in clinical settings is often locked away, making it extremely difficult for researchers to access and draw meaningful conclusions. Simply unlocking the data is not enough; understanding it requires support due to its multidisciplinary nature. With kaiko.w, we are building an AI assistant that not only connects these siloed data sources, but ensures insights are effectively communicated and shared across different departments. It transforms complex clinical information into a unified patient representation that enables truly collaborative, data-driven oncology care.” – Robert Berke, CTO at kaiko.ai.

Extensive collaboration with the Netherlands Cancer Institute

‘’Since 2021, our collaboration with NKI has brought together medical experts, data and machine learning engineers to redefine their clinical data & AI stack. This now enables the integration of any AI model and supports the ongoing development of the latest AI applications, from the summarization and automated structuring of EHR records and automated trial matching to the comprehensive segmentation of any cell types. We would like to get to a level that AI-based suggestions are so accurate, that doctors could rely on them.’’

Private AI offering by Nebul

Since October 2024, kaiko.ai has been using the Nebul Supercomputing Infrastructure extensively, maximizing its potential from day one. Within weeks, they strategically doubled their computing capacity, driven by their ambition to push the limits of innovation. With Nebul’s support, kaiko.ai has been able to process vast amounts of clinical data at unprecedented speeds, accelerating breakthroughs in cancer treatment while consistently operating at the cutting edge of available technology.

‘’We’ve been in discussions with various private cloud providers, but for us, working with patient data, fully anonymized, is a top priority. It’s crucial that our cloud provider understands the need for 100% security and compliance. We are confident that Nebul is the right partner to deliver both the quality and security we require. This has laid the foundation for a successful, long-term collaboration.’’

Solution implementation and technical support

The implementation process was carried out in multiple stages, with most requirements defined and agreed upon before contract signing. However, as is common in complex deployments, additional needs emerged during the implementation phase. These were addressed through collaborative discussions and timely support from the Nebul team. The final delivery was highly customized to align with kaiko.ai’s specific requirements. During the onboarding phase, kaiko.ai had immediate access to Nebul’s support team to ensure a smooth transition. After the initial period, support was streamlined through a structured ticketing system with severity-based tiers, ensuring clear alignment on service level agreements (SLAs) and efficient issue resolution.

Better performance = better outcomes

‘’The setup is a nice balance between full on-premises and cloud. We get the advantage of cloud setup of having most of the maintenance work handled for us, and the advantage of on-premises of having the resources exclusively reserved for us and always ready. The Nebul compute resources will continue to play a key role in enabling us to train increasingly complex and large multi-modal foundation models which is crucial to our mission of unblocking new potential in the healthcare domain.’Dang Nguyen, Staff Platform Engineer at kaiko.ai

kaiko.ai can run multi-node trainings on full scale unit cluster of HGX 8-GPU nodes which were not possible before with their Azure compute resources.

The setup has delivered a substantial reduction in compute resource costs, while significantly boosting productivity. Since adopting the Nebul solution, kaiko.ai has reported a measurable improvement in stability and availability compared to the previous setup on Azure they had. This has led to enhanced business operations and workflows.
